Getting started

New users

If you’ve never used a computer before, we strongly recommend that you acclimatise yourself to the operating environment before you proceed. Using the manual supplied with your machine, you should quickly be able to pick up all the techniques for point and click, dragging, selecting, and other elements of mouse and window control. If you can get some help from an existing user, or attend a formal training course, then we recommend you to do so.

If you don’t know how the graphical user interface works (if, for example, you don’t know what a dialogue box is, how to use scroll bars, or how to select from a pull-down menu), don’t go any further than this until you’ve found out more.

Similarly, if you are intending to use the Word Processing functions within Daybook, we suggest that you find your way round any standard Word Processor, such Microsoft Word before starting. This Tutorial does not contain detailed instructions on how to edit text, as such knowledge is already assumed.

Learning Daybook Enterprise

Daybook Enterprise is designed to be intuitive, and easy-to-use. However, when you are operating it, remember that there are many powerful features, some of which may take some learning. Don’t expect to learn the full power of Enterprise in a few minutes…

Use the Tutorial and Reference sections of each manual to familiarise yourself with the software’s many features. And, if you possibly can, arrange some training with an Authorised Daybook Trainer to cover some of the finer points, and to speed your progress to comprehensive understanding of the system.

Daybook Enterprise has matured over many years of development into a very powerful and extensive application. It has been continuously proved in real situations.

How Daybook Enterprise differs from other systems

Daybook Enterprise offers the following special characteristics:

A powerful accounting suite

Daybook Enterprise offers many features that are right at the top of the financial software scale. Much of what the system provides simply cannot be achieved with other accounting systems - and certainly not with the ease-of-use provided by Daybook Enterprise.

Integration

Daybook Enterprise is an financial system with a suite of integrated volumes (see the Volumes menu). No other package offers similar real-time integration to the level provided by Daybook Enterprise. More on this in the next section.

Development

Daybook is written in 4th Dimension, a high-level database language. 4th Dimension offers a compiler for fast single-user operation, and client/server architecture for fast multi-user access.

The Daybook Scripting Language is available, allowing you to add your own custom-built pieces of program code to your system. This allows you to add your own specialist modifications, to mirror your own business processes.

Extensive range of volumes

The software has many potential guises. If you are engaged in fee-based work, you can use the Job Costing and Time Recording functions as your business front end. If you run training courses, seminars or conferences, you will use the event and delegate booking facilities of the Event Manager.

Training

We hope that you will come to grips with Daybook Enterprise within a matter of a few days. Many new users find that the learning process can be considerably accelerated by taking some training with a Daybook Consultant.

If you are not an experienced computer user, or your knowledge is limited, or if you have never operated a computer accounting package before, it is very likely that you will require a degree of training to get up to speed with the general concepts as well as the specifics in Daybook Enterprise. Please contact your Daybook Dealer for further information on training courses.
